Steven Smith has been signed by Caribbean Premier League franchise Barbados Tridents for the upcoming T20 league. Smith is currently serving the ban period for one year imposed by Cricket Australia.
Banned Australian player Steve Smith is all set to play the upcoming season of Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2018 as he has been signed by Barbados Tridents. He will be replacing Shakib Al Hasan in the team as the Bangladesh all-rounder is not available to play the tournament. "It is a huge blow to lose Shakib for the tournament but in Steve Smith, we have a truly world-class replacement who can help to bring power to our batting lineup," Tridents coach Robin Singh said.
"As a man who has played cricket at the highest level all over the world, we are very confident that Smith will be a big success with the Tridents," he added.
Smith will join David Warner in CPL. The former vice-captain had signed for St Lucia Stars for the upcoming season, replacing D’Árcy Short, who will be away with Australia A for the tour of India.
Both the players were banned by Cricket Australia for a period of one year for their involvement in the ball-tampering saga that unearthed during the third Test of the series against South Africa.
A ban from the cricket association saw both of them losing their IPL contracts as well, despite them being allowed to play the league. CA had banned them from participating in Big Bash League and domestic cricket in Australia.
Though they were allowed to play county cricket in England and grade cricket in Australia. Along with them, CA also handed a ban to Cameron Bancroft, for a period of nine months.
Both (Smith and Warner) were drafted in different teams for the Global T20 Canada League, which was comeback tournament for both the players.
While Warner had signed for CPL last month, Smith’s signing was only confirmed after it came to notice that the Bangladesh Test captain will not be available to play the tournament.
The upcoming season of the T20 league will kick off on August 8 with defending champions Trinbago Knight Riders taking on St Lucia Stars in the opening game of the season. Smith will play his first game on August 12 against Guyana Amazon Warriors.
