The first match of Women’s T20 Challenge on 6th May saw the Trailblazers winning the match by two runs against the Supernovas. The best part of the match was probably the outstanding performances of the Indian players.
Batting first Trailblazers were in trouble after Suzie Bates gone for just one run. The young skipper, Smriti Mandhana took the charge. She built a partnership with Harleen Deol. Deol scored 36 off 44 and they batted till the 19th over. Mandhana like the captain led the team from the front and scored a brilliant 90 off just 67 balls with ten fours and three maximums. Thanks to her brilliance that her team could reach 140/5. From the Supernovas’ camp Anuja Patil finished with a brilliant figure of 4-1-12-1. Radha Yadav scalped two back to back wickets of Smriti Mandhana and Deepti Sharma in the 20th over
The chase was dramatic from the beginning only as the Supernovas lost Priya Punia (1) in the second over. Chamari Atapattu (26 off 34) and Jemimah Rodrigues ( 24 off 19) built a partnership of 49 runs to bring back the team on track. Once these two were gone with the score at 63/3 in 10.4 overs, the captain rose to the occasion. Harmanpreet Kaur scored 46 off 34 deliveries and remained not out till the end. Sophie Devine scored 32 off 22 and provided Harman the support she needed.
But the last over turned out to be a dramatic one with a magical finish. Harman hit the veteran Jhulan Goswami for four boundaries in five balls and the last ball required only three runs. Luckily Harman missed the last ball and Tahuhu was run out by the keeper Ravi Kalpana. Earlier as well Jemimah was the victim of a run out that was caused by Shakera Selman. The birthday girl Sophie Ecclestone was the most successful bowler for Smriti’s team and ended with a figure of 4-0-11-2.
