The Delhi Capitals claimed their fourth win of IPL 2019 and the beat the Kolkata Knight Riders by seven wickets at the Eden Gardens in the 26th IPL match. Shikhar Dhawan was the hero of the match who masterminded the chase for Delhi.
Kolkata Knight Riders were asked to bat first and Shubman Gill coming to open the innings was a surprise to all. But this strategy helped the team eventually. Shubman Gill’s 39-ball 65 and later Andre Russell’s 21-ball 45 were the reasons that KKR could put a competitive score of 178 for the loss of seven wickets. Joe Denly, the debutant for KK and Gill’s opening partner for the match was dismissed off the first ball of the match. Gill along with Robin Uthappa did build the innings post that initial blow. But then it was Russell who plundered four sixes and three fours to take the score post 170.
During the chase, it was a moderate start for Delhi. Prithvi Shaw added 14 off seven balls and he was sent back to the pavilion. Then Shreyas Iyer and Shikhar Dhawan added 25 runs for the second wicket. Once that partnership was broken, Dhawan took the charge to steer the run-chase. He scored unbeaten on 97 from 63 balls and found a partner in Rishabh Pant, who made 46 from 31 balls. Their partnership of 105 runs ensured the victory for Delhi. Although Pant was, Dhawan won the match with seven balls remaining.
The Turning Point
The turning point of the match was when Dhawan was on 11 when a caught behind decision against Dhawan was reviewed y KKR. After multiple replays, the third umpire gave it a not out. But that was a close one. So if Dhawan was given out at that point of time, there was a chance of the match ending in the favor of KKR.
