Kings XI Punjab ended their IPL 2019 journey on a high note and won the match against Chennai Super Kings. Punjab finished above Rajasthan Royals and Royal Challengers Bangalore and CSK ended the group stage with number two position.
Batting first Chennai lost Shane Watson (7) quickly enough but once Faf du Plessis rose to the occasion. He along with Suresh Raina stayed till the 16th over and carried the whole innings. Raina scored 53 off 38 whereas du Plessis scored a masterful 96 off 55 with 10 fours and four sixes. Although he fell short of four runs from scoring a hundred, du Plessis ensured CSK score a decent score of 170 for the loss of five wickets. From Punjab, Mohammed Shami and Sam Curran were brilliant. Shami conceded only 17 runs in three overs to take two wickets. Curran took three wickets of Watson, du Plessis, and Raina.
KL Rahul controlled the entire run chase for Punjab. He was so flawless that even Chris Gayle (28 off 28) was looking calm in front of him. Rahul mastered a 71 off 36 balls with seven fours and five sixes. But suddenly Punjab was looking in trouble with the scoreboard reading 108 for the loss of two openers in two consecutive balls of Harbhajan Singh. But Nicholas Pooran didn’t let the momentum go from their court and scored 36 off 22 before going back to the pavilion with the team requiring only six more runs to win. From Chennai bowling squad, Harbhajan Singh took two major wickets and gave the breakthrough they needed but conceded more than 14 runs per over as well. Ravindra Jadeja took the other wicket. But CSK bowlers couldn’t really do much even after Bhajji scalping the much-needed wickets off back to back deliveries. As a result of Punjab comfortably won the match and ended the IPL journey of this season.
