Andre Russell’s brilliant show helped Kolkata Knight Riders to clinch a victory in the second match of Indian Premier League 2019. It was a tussle between KKR and Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Eden Gardens. This match was also a much-anticipated comeback of the Australian superstar David Warner.
When It Began
KKR won the toss and opted to field first. David Warner and Jonny Bairstow put up a 118 run first wicket partnership for Hyderabad. While Bairstow played the role of an anchor, Warner was furious. He scored 85 off only 43 balls and proved that he was never really out of cricket. After serving one year ban, it was important for Warner to make the most of his comeback match. He looked smooth and built his innings on nine boundaries and three over boundaries. Mainly because of these two openers, and later a quick cameo from Vijay Shankar (40 off 24) helped SRH to put a score of 181.
During the chase, KKR lost the early wicket of Chris Lynn in the second innings and looked a little uncomfortable. But Nitish Rana steadied the innings. Along with Robin Uthappa, he kept adding runs to the scoreboard. He set the platform with a 68 off 47. But SRH was still not out of the match as they were taking wickets at frequent intervals.
With 53 runs needed off 18 balls, KKR fans lost all the hope. Well, almost. There was a hitting man in the KKR side. He created magic at the crease. Even the best bowler from the other side, Bhuvneshwar Kumar looked clueless in front of the Russell storm.
Russell smashed a 49 off 19 balls and built his innings on four boundaries and four over boundaries. He was well supported by a young Shubman Gill (18 off 10) who finished off the game with two sixes in the last over of the match.
KKR will be thrilled to bits with this win. They did well to restrict SRH to under 200 and then when the game was running away from them, Russell pulled a rabbit out of the hat. It's still early days in the tournament and both these teams are strong on paper, it will be interesting to see how they perform in the next few matches respectively. The star of the match has to be Andre Russell for his blistering knock and his two wickets with the ball, and a quick mention to Dinesh Karthik who handled his bowlers well under pressure.
