Rishab Pant’s whirlwind knock of 78 off 27 clinched the first victory for Delhi Capitals in IPL 2019. Delhi beat Mumbai Indians by 37 runs to begin their IPL campaign with a bang at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.
How It Began
Batting first, Rishab Pant led Delhi Capitals to put up a massive target of 213/6 for Delhi Capitals on Sunday. He took only 18 balls to complete his half-century and hit seven sixes and seven fours. Initially, Delhi lost a quick wicket of Prithvi Shaw. Then Shikhar Dhawan tried to stabilize the situation with support from the captain, Shreyas Iyer, and Colin Ingram. Dhawan made 43 off 36 balls and along with Ingram, took Delhi's score from 29 /2 to 112/3. Ingram scored 47 off 32. Then began the Pant show! Apart from McClenaghan, none from the Mumbai bowling side could stop Delhi Capitals. McClenaghan scalped three wickets for 40 runs.
Mumbai Indians kept on losing wickets at regular intervals during the chase. Yuvraj scored 53 off 35 balls and at a certain point of time, tried to steady the innings along with Pollard (21 of 13) and then Krunal Pandya (32 off 15). But the score was too high to achieve. Delhi needed the top order to score big runs to make the chase comfortable. Only Yuvraj Singh gave few moments when it felt like Delhi would be able to reach the target. Rabad was outstanding from the Mumbai camp, he and Ishant Sharma took two wickets each.
For Mumbai, the situation became worse as their leading bowler Jasprit Bumrah injured himself during the Delhi innings. He hurt his left shoulder after falling over in his follow through on the last ball of Delhi Innings. The official statement from the Mumbai Indias read, "Jasprit Bumrah has recovered well. We will be assessing him tomorrow as well." But Bumrah didn't come out to bat during Mumbai Innings.
