Mithali Raj becomes first Indian woman to score 10,000 international runs

Mithali Raj became the second woman cricketer to complete 10,000 international runs across all formats of the game. India Women were playing third ODI against South Africa Women where Mithali Raj, the captain of the host team achieved the feat.

India Women and South Africa Women were playing third ODI of the ongoing 5-match series at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow. South Africa won the toss and elected to field first. Batting first India Women scored 248 for the loss of five wickets. Raj scored 36 off 50 balls and in the process, crossed 10,000-run mark in the international cricket. She became second woman to do so in cricket and took 212th match. Prior to Raj, it was England women’s cricketer Charlotte Edwards who had achieved the feat. "What a champion cricketer! First Indian woman batter to score 10K international runs. Take a bow, @M_Raj03," the BCCI tweeted.

Mithali Raj hit a boundary against Anne Bosch in the 28th over of India's innings to create history however, she was dismissed off the next ball after reaching the milestone. Raj has so far represented India in 10 Tests and 89 T20Is where she has scored 663 and 2364 runs respectively. In 212 ODIs Mithali has now accumulated 6974 runs.

Ahead of the 3rd ODI, Smriti Mandhana spoke on the skipper’s consistency. "Getting to 10,000 runs first or second is a huge thing. She is the first Indian to do that so I think it is something that shows how consistent she has been throughout her career. We have looked up to her, definitely a very proud feeling for all of us in the team."

As far as the match is concerned, it was Punam Raut’s 77 and able contributions from Raj, Harmanpreet Kaur (36), and Deepti Sharma (36*) that India Women could reach to a respectable score on Friday. In response, Lizelle Lee from South Africa scored a massive 132* off 131 balls to help her side win the match. The 5-match series is currently 2-1 in favour of South Africa after the third ODI.
